Follow your own inner clock

In my view, each person has his own inner rhythm. The key to maximizing your potential is to be in sync with your rhythm and clock.

I think that many people would have been much more successful in many aspects of their lives if they were able to set their individual pace. I realize that advice I am about to give won’t always be possible to implement. Nevertheless it is important to know because inner rhythm and clock affect your future in many ways.

1. Your rhythm

Did you notice that some people are fast and effective at the same time? They tend to make good decisions on a go. Such people often seem to do several things simultaneously, yet they rarely make mistakes. These individuals have fast inner rhythm.

What about people who always seem to get ahead of themselves? They try to do things fast but always lose something, forget about important details or get nervous. Well, they are out of sync with their inner pace. They would have been far more effective if they slowed down a little bit.

People in the first group aren’t necessarily smarter or have a better potential. It has nothing to do with that. In many instances those who take more time to do their tasks achieve better overall results. The key is to do things in your own rhythm and you’ll see better results.

2. Your day clock

There are early morning birds, night owls and those somewhere in between. You will be more productive if you schedule your most important tasks when you are at your mental peak – before noon for morning people and afternoon for others.

What if circumstances force you to work on most crucial assignments at the time of a day when you are not at your best? There are two solutions available.

First one is to try to change your inner clock. Unfortunately it’s not always possible. Second way is to prepare for an important job at your peak time. Suppose that you’re a morning bird that has a business meeting at 4 p.m. You should have a planning session in a morning: prepare your discussion points, think about possible issues and so on. This way you stand a better chance to be successful even when your tasks are scheduled at inconvenient times.

3. Your long term clock

There are times when we are at our very best, and both, people around us and circumstances, are aligned with our goals. It can last a few months or a few years. Then there are periods of uncertainty or even setbacks. In a while good times come back.

You must try to accomplish as much as possible when the window of opportunity is open. Such periods present a great chance to maximize your potential in many areas of your life. By the same logic it makes a sense to postpone some of your plans when things aren’t so good.

People with wrong inner pace often seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time in terms of their career, finances and personal life. That is why it is extremely important to determine and follow your rhythm and clock. This way you will have more successful and happier future.
